Chronicles of a Senior Poet at Open Mic Night
Poetry Soars in Local Sports Bar with a Senior Wordsmith
In the time since the book's release, I have taken moments to reflect upon the incredible experiences and opportunities that have graced my path. One such unexpected adventure took me to a local sports and grill bar for my first public reading. Yes, you read that correctly – a bar! This establishment, known for its lively comedy hour, graciously hosted poetry readings as well. When an opportunity arose for a member of our poetry club to share their work, a hush fell over the room until I enthusiastically stepped forward. The night of the event arrived, and I chose a poem dear to my heart – "Mighty Warrior." Laughter and conversation filled the air as patrons enjoyed their evening, the rhythmic clatter of billiards serving as a backdrop.
As the preceding comedian struggled to elicit laughs with ill-timed jokes, exiting amidst disapproval, it was my turn to take the stage. However, a high platform posed an unexpected challenge. I was graciously lifted onto the stage by a sturdy bouncer, positioned front and center with no escape route. In a light-hearted attempt to break the ice, I quipped, "Let's hear it for a Senior citizen!" Laughter and applause reverberated through the room, setting a positive tone for my reading. I expressed my gratitude to the audience for joining in the festivities and for being the first to hear my reading. The room grew hushed as I delved into my poem, capturing the attention of the gathered crowd. The evening exceeded my expectations, resulting in an open invitation from the owner of Knuckles Sports Bar and Grill, extended to both me and my fellow poet.
